Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the transit clearance process.
What is a Transit Clearance Certificate?
A Transit Clearance Certificate is the official document authorising a vessel to transit the Strait. It is issued by the Transit Permits Division upon receipt of a completed application and payment of the applicable fee. The certificate is valid for 72 hours from the time of issue.
Who must apply?
All commercial vessels transiting the Strait — whether inbound or outbound — are required to hold a valid Transit Clearance Certificate. This includes crude oil tankers, product tankers, bulk carriers, container ships, and general cargo vessels.
How is the fee determined?
The Transit Clearance Fee is based on the vessel's declared deadweight tonnage (DWT). Four tiers apply; the full schedule is published on the Schedule of Fees page. An additional expedited processing surcharge applies if same-day issuance is required.
What is the processing time?
Standard applications are processed within 48 hours of payment confirmation. Expedited applications are processed within 24 hours for an additional fee.
Can I apply for multiple vessels at once?
Yes. Fleet lodgements of three or more vessels qualify for a 10% fleet rate discount applied to the subtotal of all certificates in the lodgement. Each vessel still receives its own individual certificate.
How do I verify a certificate?
Certificates can be verified on the Verify page using the certificate number (e.g. BMC-2026-CL-00001), the application reference number, or the vessel's IMO number.
What documents are required with the application?
The mandatory fields are vessel name, IMO number, flag state, DWT, GRT, transit direction, cargo type, cargo quantity, and contact details for the operator or agent. Supporting documents — registration, manifest, crew list, proof of ownership — are optional but may be requested by the Division.
What happens if my certificate expires during transit?
A certificate that expires during an active transit does not invalidate the passage provided the vessel entered the Strait while the certificate was valid. Applications for extension must be lodged immediately on becoming aware of a likely overrun.
